WQWWC: Change

For this week I have chosen a quote from Rumi based on theme Change .It is from the  book ,The Diwan of Shams of Tabriz, by Jalaluddin Rumi.

quote_rumi_change

The complete verse from which the quote is taken :

Those who don`t feel this Love
pulling them like a river,
those who don`t drink dawn
like a cup of spring water
or take in sunset like supper,
those who don`t want to change,

let them sleep.

Love the beauty of this verse ! How poetically Rumi pointed at people who are reluctant to change to consider them as sleeping. What good for others is a sleeping man? What do he or she knows about the events happening around him when he is sleeping. So is the condition of a man who doesn’t want to change  ! He just close his eyes to the truth. The acknowledgement of self and taking care of that inner self is often referred as Awakening where one wakes up to accept the change from this worldly aimless sleep. He observes the beauty in sunrise and sunset , pain becomes blessing and sharing  a joy.You become a seeker of knowledge and truth. The more you experience real joy , less appealing appears to you this life’s distractions. The first step to the path of truth is willingness to  Change and then imbibe the changes in our life to make it more meaningful.

What Hijab Means to me, HASHTAG #Hijabtome

Recently Huffington Post have asked Muslim women to tell to the world what Hijab means to them. A call out to all Hijabis to use this Hashtag and tell everyone what Hijab means to you! You can circulate your post on all social Networks using Hashtag #Hijabtome with brief description along with your picture.

So here is mine would love reading yours!

Hijab to me is a symbol of pride for being a Muslim woman. In the times where Islam is misrepresented by ISIS and Islamophobia is growing, I hold my Dear Hijab to me to tell to the world I am not ashamed of being a Muslim. People still categorize my recent change in dress up as backward and my question to them is still the same how can somebody’s choice of clothes be forward or backward! It is a choice like any other choice and I have the freedom to choose! I have chosen mine and you have chosen yours. Cannot be that by wearing different clothes we can still walk on the same path of peace, harmony and mutual respect? You didn’t read my mind, you didn’t see my heart! So please don’t judge me with the clothes I wear and neither should I do to you.

Personally choosing Hijab was a decision to focus more on my inner self rather my outer appearance. It’s been a year almost and I feel I have grown as a person, I have read more and applied some in my life and strive to continue in my life’s journey with Hijab Insha’Allah! Leaving gradually the hollow customs and social traditions to a more meaning life .There have always been conflicts between my inner and outer self and I feel it will remain till I die but I feel more alive to be driven by my soul rather a body driving a soul.

More and more women are opting for Hijab to make a collective effort to eradicate Islamophobia that all Muslims are not terrorists or dangerous. We are as peace loving as you do and we hate terrorism more than you do. People are dying in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan and they are all Muslims who are killed by supposedly Muslims, my heart doesn’t allow me to identify them as fellow Muslims,  they are just Terrorists who have no humanity left in them. Muslims are suffering from both ends. We do not deserve a global hatred, we need to get understood for the biggest problem of this century.

My post too is a way to convey my thoughts to all my readers for raising Hijab Awareness. I hope more and more people understand it. Please do not judge a book by its cover! Nor do all books with similar cover are same!

Writer’s Quote Wednesday Writing Challenge :Fantasy(Flash Fiction)

Love this quote from Patrick Rothfuss, The Wise Man’s Fear about the capability of human mind to find answers to question left unanswered!  The imagination has wings which take us from world of reality to world of dreams . The chase of these dreams has led men to invention, innovation and  great discoveries.

Can you imagine a life without imaginations ?

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”
Albert Einstein

This week’s theme being Fantasy, I wrote a flash fiction , I guess kids would like it more, but not many are on wordpress :D, Do let me know if you like it !

Princess  of Floriana

Katie was a slow moving green wobbly creature in land of Feriona the magic world. She was an orphan and being raised by her aunt who worked for the Queen of Feriona . Circumstances allowed her to live inside the beautiful lotus shaped Palace built on water pond as her aunt was Queen’s main attendant.

Katie was often the subject of mockery and teasing at hands of young beautiful fairies living inside the castle because of her looks. She has often dreamt of being beautiful like them and become a kind princess unlike all of them, Many times she used to sit alone near the pond side and talk to herself through the reflection in the water, her green skin colour and odd wriggling structure often made her cry and her tears would mix with the water of pond and spread beautiful vibrant colours on the surface. She used to console herself and reassures that looks are not everything, true beauty lies inside the heart of a person and it never fades. She is beautiful from inside and she knows it.

Tired of their behaviour  towards her, Katie decides to leave the palace and explore Floriana, the magical flower land, she has always heard about since her childhood. It was far away across the river at foothills. The most beautiful and kindest of fairies live there. She wanted to go and live in a land of justice and peace. The journey was long and hard, it took her many days to squirm across the forest and reach the river. At the bed of river, she almost lost her hope and started crying! How will she cross the vast river , she cannot swim and unlike other fairies she has no wings to fly. The old weeping willow’s heart melted down and he gave her a big leaf which Katie could use to swim across the river. She hugged and thanked the old tree to save her life and her life’s only dream.

Katie reached the huge heart shaped gates of Floriana , the two guards let her in without any question ! Not amused, she was prepared for a long explanation, she kept walking in a wonder looking left and right at the huge flowers of every colour and type she has ever imagined. She saw a group of fairies walking towards her, all happy to receive her; they gave her a welcome drink made from flower nectar. Katie was then to see the elderly Queen as was the law for every newbie. Walking down the aisle she saw many pictures of creatures like her hung on the walls, she was not a weird creature, there exist more of her kind! This very thought gladdened Katie’s heart and she smiled all the way. Katie reached the door of Queen and with her permission they all went inside. The queen sat in her bed while her magnificent wings sprawled across the floor having the same colours as of  her tears.

The Queen was happy to receive Katie like a lost child.

“All fairies of Floriana live here, you are from us. Where were you my Child until now? “ The Queen told her.

“ Me a fairy of Floriana ??  I lived in Feriona with my aunt ,she brought me up when my parents died.” replied Katie.

“ Feriona?  It is not our kind,” Queen was puzzled.

“I was the odd one there. Everyone made fun of me and I decided to leave that land” Katie replied with a heavy voice and tears in her eyes.

The tears went down making patterns of colours, Queen looked at them unbelievingly. She took her magic wand and touched the pattern. The tears rose to a small cloud and became a crown  placing itself on Katie’s head, soon Katie transformed into a beautiful young Butterfly Fairy  with huge vibrant wings same like that of Queen who was so happy to find the much awaited princess of Floriana and her next heiress. Katie has always has dreamt of becoming a princess and it came true that day. Her happiness couldn’t be described into words.

Don’t lose hope of your inner beauty the world will recognise it one day.

Thoughts of a Hijabi on the Beach

Last weekend we had  nice sunny weather in Belgium, and we thought to make the most of it, We planned a day trip to Ostend, a Belgian city on coastline of North Sea.

Would like to share some of my beach moments as Hijabi may be fellow Hijabis can commiserate with me:

  • You look so ‘not for the beach’ with your full body covering including your head when everyone around is scarcely dressed! People look at you with a shock as if they really see what they see! Sorry to embarrass you guys! I too need to see beach sometimes 😉
  • You sense the feelings in your neighbours’ frowns and stares  until they give whatever blah-blah look and go back to their sun-tanning lying on the back pose.
  • Your eyes constantly searching for fellow Hijabis.
  •  After some time you will find few hijabi birds flocking around bringing their mat/sheets closer to yours, frequently exchanging the empathizing glance and smiles.
  • The wind making it difficult for the hijab to be in place and you are struggling to pull it back all the time and if you have kept your sandwich outside for few minutes it already tastes sand, you reach out to your water bottle and it is warm already.

Once you start looking at the sea and hear the sound of big joyous waves, the mesh of thoughts inside your brain gets dissolved and washed away. The sea makes an instant connection with you irrespective of who you are and what you are wearing. I tried reading a book for some time but sun was too strong to be overlooked. I decided to walk down the shore the cold water providing me relief and chill at the same time. I looked around the beach with my scanner eyes: kids playing in water, laughing and running. Few little ladies were busy making their sand castles and so engrossed in their work. There were some elderly couples walking hand in hand and contemplating life. I stood there watching the sea waves arriving and departing, thoughtless and contented.

so while I was finishing off my post and it was time to choose a  category I came across an already existing category  ‘Hijab Awareness’ and indeed the idea behind post was creating awareness for Hijab.I used  a comic sense in my post but behind the light jokes lies crude reality that people still don’t know much about Hijab and if they know they do not have very good thoughts about it, few  people I crossed on the beach gave me weird looks. I might be out of place according to them  or a criminal for fashion police but it’s my choice just like they have theirs , why should  there be a set of rules defined of how  one be dressed according to a place/occasion. One should  wear whatever according  to his/her comfort level , likeness and not out of social pressure  to fit in .We need to have acceptance and tolerance of each other’s beliefs ,culture and life’s choices.

High Expectations from your Spouse ?

I often have thoughts about writing on Marriage and Relationships but I always keep postponing since I  think myself a novice at advising people who are already married for years but I think I am experienced enough for newly married people or people going to be married soon .

Marriage is a wonderful bond where two people come forward with a  shared thought of spending rest of their lives together .Both of them have already a  set of expectations from each other .The main reason of conflict among newlyweds is often Higher Expectations which  lead to loss of trust and interest in married life which has just begun . We all live inside our  bubble world of dreams, we have an image of our future spouse in our minds how he/she  would be, how their behavior should be with us in our perfect ideal world

                                                             BUT

life is different so is every individual , Coming face to face with reality is a tough ride , how you take this ride and degree of your acceptance to it defines your future married life. The way you have lived your life until now is different from how he/She has been living so far.Coming together under one roof after spending almost half of your life somewhere else is already a  big move in itself.

Marriage is not only about getting new clothes, deciding wedding albums  and choosing honeymoon destinations . Marriage is a big responsibility of your own self towards another. Thanks to TV, Media for setting all wrong expectations in our minds especially for girls that  a prince charming will come to  take us away and we then say bye bye to all our life long problems.Life will be fun ! eating,  shopping and merry making ever after.  Sorry to say that , it only happens on TV and in stories.

The natural behavior of man and woman has lot more differences than you have actually read or thought about, and this you experience once you start living with your partner. Women are more emotional, more talkative and yearning for expressions of love from their husbands! Men on the other hand  are practical human race who have a set of things of to do everyday, wife also becomes a part of routine and the special something becomes everyday thing (my own thoughts ). It is not that he doesn’t love you now or you’re not special person in his life, this is how he is! Expressing as we expect them to  is not at all man’s thing! TV  and phones are their inseparable sweethearts. A daily tiring work routine completely takes off their energy to be so excited to see you in evening or talk to you incessantly! A good meal is preferred over  rant about in laws or maids or life in general.

How do we  women take it ? It often start with small complains first  and then these  complains become  arguments leading to fights and soon a loving new couple finds themselves amidst a fight every now and then.

  • I think first thing to do is never ever involve any of your parents in your fights. Solve it between you two.
  • If you think a discussion is leading into a heated argument, where one of you is losing temper, Stop it there. Tell him/her to discuss it when their mood is better. There is no point talking to an angry person who has no power to rationalize things.
  • Living by example, show your partner how you would like to be treated ,treat them that special way, First Give and then expect .
  • Find some common activity  to spend time with each other like cooking together, taking a walk outside or praying together .
  • Don’t force yourself on other person for things she/he doesn’t like.Respect their choices and opinions.
  • Don’t forget to celebrate the differences ! Of course we are not mirror images, there will always be differences but it should never come to our hearts.Once in while try to do things your partner likes to make him/her feel special. Wear their favorite color, cook or bring their favorite food.
  • Watch your tone while talking to your partner, we often take each other for granted . A well mannered tone with respectful words for putting your point could never lead to a fight.
  • Every human being has flaws ,our spouses and us are no exception either. We need to accept their flawed real version than the perfect version from our dreams .We have to overlook  each other’s mistakes and retain the sweetness of love.
  • Give it time, time is best therapy. Marriage too needs time like everything else. You would be soon well adjusted with each other’s way of life and know each other like nobody ever did.Watch-your-tone-while
